Álvaro Ortiz

Álvaro Ortiz (Zaragoza, 1983) studied graphic design at the Escuela Superior de Diseño de Aragón and illustration at the Escola Massana in Barcelona.

In 2012 he published Ashes, a comic book created thanks to the Alhóndiga Bilbao grant at the Maison des Auteurs de Angoulême. In 2014 sees the light Murderabilia, and in 2015 Rituales (Rituals), made at the Academy of Spain in Rome, thanks to one of the MAEC-AECID grants.

He also publishes Dos holandeses en Nápoles (Two Dutchmen in Naples - 2016), a comic book commissioned by the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Viajes (Trips - 2016), and during the pandemic of Covid 19, El murciélago sale a por birras (The Bat goes out for Beers - 2020) and Prdro y Maili (2021).

La pequeña genia y la partida de shatranj (The Little Genie and the Shatranj Game - 2022), his first foray into children's comics, won the prize for best children's comic at the Salón del cómic de Valencia and the prize for best work at the Salón del cómic de Zaragoza, and in 2024 he published its sequel, La pequeña genia y el monstruo del valle (The Little Genie and the Valley Monster).

In Spain his comics are published by Astiberri, and some are also published in countries such as France, Italy, Germany, Poland and the USA, where Ashes was recently nominated for the prestigious Harvey and Eisner Awards.
