La habitación de las monstruas is a comic book that explores the historical representation of the bodies of Western female mythological creatures. From the sphinx to the mermaid, from the chimera to the medusa and the hydra, the comic explores the “monstrous” attributes associated with these figures and how they have evolved into new sexualized readings, such as the mermaid, whose original conception (a dangerous creature with sharp claws, half bird, half woman) has mutated into a symbol of sensuality in tattoos and animation.
The comic takes place in a world where women dress up to ward off the male gaze, following the motto “Fear has to change sides”. In a misogynistic society, these “monsters” exaggerate their abnormal appearance as a defense mechanism. Bat wings, dragon tails, chicken feet, goat bodies, scales, feathers, horns? Through their disguises, the protagonists of La habitación de las monstruas defy a world that condemns them for their physique and their feminine condition.
